The plans above are examples to guide a discussion—not a binding offer. Premiums, eligible ages, waiting periods, exclusions and benefits differ by policy and insurer. Cover must be underwritten by a licensed life insurer.
A funeral policy usually pays an agreed cash benefit after a valid death claim. Families can use it to meet expenses such as funeral arrangements, transport, food, a coffin or casket, and other immediate costs.
Unlike a funeral service package, a cash funeral policy does not automatically arrange the funeral. Ask what the policy actually pays and whether any service benefits are included.
Start with the people whose funeral costs you are most likely to carry. Add cover carefully: covering more people or choosing higher benefit amounts can increase your monthly premium.
Check the premium review terms and ask how the premium could change over time. Keep your contact, debit-order and beneficiary details current.
Funeral policies commonly have a waiting period for natural death claims. Accidental-death claims may be treated differently, depending on the policy. The waiting period and any transfer rules from previous cover must be explained to you before you join.
Do not cancel existing cover before you understand whether you will serve a new waiting period. Ask for this in writing, especially if you are moving from another insurer.
Funeral insurance in South Africa is regulated under the Insurance Act. The FSCA’s regulatory overview explains the requirement for funeral insurance to be provided by licensed insurers.
